Product Spotlight: Sony XAV-AX5000

Sony XAV-AX5000Sony has been steadily increasing its share of the head unit market with the introduction of feature-packed solutions that continue to give consumers the connectivity and source options they want. The latest addition to Sony’s source unit offerings is the XAV-AX5000, a 6.95-inch multimedia receiver with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Bluetooth. The XAV-AX5000 is the first large-screen source unit from Sony that includes Apple and Android smartphone integration technologies and, given its feature set, it should be another huge hit.

Large 6.95-inch Display

Sony XAV-AX5000Sony calls the display on the AX5000 bezel-less. The trim panel around the display is only a few millimeters thick and gives the unit a very clean and tidy look once installed. The display has a resolution of 800 by 480 pixels and uses a capacitive touch panel. Unlike resistive touch panels that have a plastic texture, a capacitive display is the same as what we are used to on our smartphones — crystal-clear images with a very responsive touchscreen interface.

At the bottom of the screen is a row of buttons for volume, track selection, Home and Option functions. The Home button serves double duty as a system mute function when held for one second, and the Options button initiates the voice-recognition feature of CarPlay or Android Auto when pressed when a corresponding phone is plugged in.

The chassis of the XAV-AX5000 is a single-DIN, shallow-mount receiver on top, with nothing on the bottom. This chassis design makes installation much easier for your installer than conventional full-size, double-DIN source units. The XAV-AX500 design allows it to be installed into newer vehicles that have less room behind the factory radio, or require integration harnesses to be tucked behind it.

Smartphone Integration Technologies

Sony XAV-AX5000As mentioned, the XAV-AX5000 includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration software. If you haven’t experienced these interfaces, they make it very easy to make phone calls, listen to and send replies to text messages, choose the music you want or get navigation directions to almost any address in North America. The interface uses Siri or Google Assistant voice recognition software to perform the majority of functions, so you can keep your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel.

Entertainment Options

Sony XAV-AX5000The XAV-AX5000 includes two USB ports on the rear of the chassis. USB 1 is compatible with iPhone and Android smartphone devices for CarPlay and Android Auto. USB 2 takes care of connecting a USB memory stick to to play MP3, WMA and FLAC digital media files. USB 1 supports WAV, ACC, MPEG-4, WMV, MKV and Xvid files as well. Audio files can have a maximum sampling frequency of 96kHz and video files can have a maximum resolution of 1280×720 pixels.

The unit includes a Bluetooth 3.0 transceiver for hands-free calling and audio streaming. The Bluetooth A2DP Profile 1.3 and AVRCP 1.3 make it easy to select tracks from compatible Bluetooth devices. You can upgrade the system with an SXV300 SiriusXM tuner module for satellite radio. The system doesn’t play CDs or DVDs, and there is no auxiliary input connection.

Audio and Signal Processing Features

The unit includes an internal four-channel amplifier rated at 20 watts continuous and 55 watts maximum output. Front, rear and subwoofer preamp outputs rated at 2 volts make it easy for your installer to add high-power amps to the source unit to expand the performance of your entertainment system even further.

Sony has included its EQ10 10-band equalizer to allow for system fine-tuning. The Dynamic Stage Organizer (DSO) provides signal processing presets to make it sound as though you are at a live performance with the musicians out in front of you, rather than hearing music coming from each speaker. Electronic high- and low-pass crossovers and a feature called Extra Bass are also part of the tuning options.

Vehicle Integration Features

Sony XAV-AX5000The XAV-AX5000 includes a dedicated backup camera input with trigger wire to allow you to see objects or people behind your vehicle when parking or maneuvering. The system also includes an external Bluetooth microphone for excellent voice recognition and Bluetooth call quality. Finally, the system is compatible with the majority of factory-installed steering wheel mounted audio controls using a third-party interface, or by using the Custom Steering Wheel Control set-up on the radio itself.

Premium Multimedia Solution

The final feature worth discussing is the new system processor. This upgraded microcontroller makes the XAV-AX5000 as much as 250 percent faster to respond to commands and gestures as compared to previous models. Imagine an iPhone 8 compared to an iPhone 5 or a Galaxy S9 compared to an S5. Access to features and voice-control commands are lightning-fast.

If you are considering upgrading the infotainment technology in your vehicle, drop by your local authorized Sony retailer and ask for a demonstration of the XAV-AX5000.

Product Spotlight: Sony XS-GS1631C Spotlight

Sony XS-GS1631CSony introduced their new XS-GS1631C 3-way component speaker system at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. The system includes a pair of 6.5-inch woofers, a set of 3.5-inch midrange drivers, a pair of 1-inch soft-dome tweeters and a set of passive crossover networks. This system is designed as a premium upgrade for vehicles with door and dash speaker locations. The system offers a 3-year warranty for long-term peace of mind. Let’s take a close look at what Sony has come up with.

Benefits of the Sony XS-GS1631C

A trait common to all speakers is directivity. Based on the cone diameter alone, the sound coming from a speaker becomes more directional as frequencies increase. One of the key benefits of a 3-way front speaker set is that each driver is operated below the frequencies where they become directional. As a result, the speakers provide evenly distributed sound throughout the vehicle. When the midrange and tweeters are mounted high in the doors or dash, the soundstage will typically be higher compared to a conventional 2-way speaker configuration.

6.5-inch Woofer Features

Sony XS-GS1631CThe woofers from the set are based on a stamped steel basket. Mounting holes and tabs are provided for 6.5 and 6.75-inch bolt circles. The cones of the woofers are made from Sony’s proprietary MRC (Mica Reinforced Cellular) polypropylene. In this application they are reinforced with aramid fibers. The result is a low-mass design with rigidity more than ten times higher than competitor polypropylene cones, but just a fraction of the mass. Rubber surrounds and poly dust caps round out the moving component features. Sony includes trim rings and a set of grilles with the woofers.

3.5-inch Midrange Design

Sony XS-GS1631CThe midrange drivers in the XS-GS1631C set also feature stamped steel baskets. Two mounting tabs are provided and serve as a direct fit for Toyota, Chrysler, Dodge, Ram as well as many GM and Ford vehicles without the need for modification. In some cases, the midrange drivers use the factory mounting bolts. Each midrange speaker uses a compact neodymium magnet that helps keep the overall mounting depth to a diminutive 1-7/16 inches.

The cones of the midrange drivers use the same aramid fiber reinforced MRC poly cone material as the woofers. They also feature a rubber surround. Rubber surrounds last longer than foam. They help to ensure these speakers will continue to sound great for years.

1-inch Tweeter Technologies

Sony XS-GS1631CThe tweeters in the set include provisions for flush, surface and angled installations. Unlike the midrange, the tweeter design includes a grille that is optimized for installations where the unit will be visible. The tweeter has a 1-inch synthetic fiber design for smooth and detailed sound.Sony XS-GS1631C

Passive Crossover Networks

As mentioned, the set includes a pair of passive crossover networks. The networks filter the speakers at 500 and 5000 Hz. A switch inside the crossover allows the installer to set the tweeter level at -2, 0 or +4dB to compensate for different installation configurations and listener preferences. The crossover can be wired in a bi-amplified configuration to provide independent control over the woofer level. Alternatively, you can jumper the inputs and drive the entire speaker set from a single amplifier channel.

Sony uses a combination of air and iron-core inductors, electrolytic capacitors and a premium mylar capacitor for the tweeters. Sony took the time to mount each inductor to the circuit board securely to prevent any reliability issues.

Specifications

Sony rates the speaker set as being capable of handling 120 watts of power using the CTA-2031 standard. Efficiency is specified at 87dB (+/- 2dB) and frequency response at an impressive 30 to 30,000 Hz range.

Sony XM-GS6DSP Compatible

Sony XS-GS1631CFor a truly amazing listening experience, combine the XS-GS1631C with Sony’s new six-channel XM-GS6DSP amplifier. The GS6DSP amp can be used to power the system speaker in a fully-active 3-way configuration or in combination with the passive crossovers and a dedicated subwoofer, to create an amazing four-way system. In either case, the signal delay and equalization capabilities of the GS6DSP will allow your installer to create an impressively accurate soundstage across the dash of your vehicle. A good tech can further tune the system for a smooth and natural frequency response.

Premium Speaker Upgrade Solution

The new XS-GS1631C three-way speaker set is a bold step forward for a Japanese company like Sony. As is evident from their other recent product introductions, Sony is focused on developing cost-effective, high-performance solutions to make car stereo systems that sound great! If you are in the market for speaker upgrade for your vehicle, and it has room for a three-way speaker set, drop by your local Sony dealer and audition the XS-GS1631C system today.

Product Spotlight: Momento R1 Rearview Mirror

Momento R1 Rearview MirrorDid you know that about 25% of accidents take place while a vehicle is in reverse? To reduce the chances of injury or accidents, Firstech — maker of Momento in-car camera solutions — has recently introduced a complete backup safety solution. The heart of this solution is the Momento R1 rearview mirror. Let’s look at how the Momento backup camera and safety system can help prevent accidents and reduce driver anxiety in a crowded parking lot.

Momento R1 Backup Camera Mirror

Momento R1 Rearview MirrorThe R1 is a 10.5 by 3.2-inch mirror designed to equal the quality, performance and reliability of a factory-installed mirror. During normal use, the mirror works just like the mirror that came with your car or truck. When the mirror detects a video signal from a camera, a 4.3-inch 480 x 272 pixel screen on the left side of the mirror displays the image. The screen is visible through the reflective coating, allowing you to see the camera image clearly, even in bright sunlight. The R1 includes a built-in light sensor that adjusts the display brightness to compensate for day and night operation.

Dual Camera Inputs

The R1 mirror includes two camera inputs. Rearview cameras and a forward-facing parking camera are the most common applications for the R1. Cargo cameras or blind spot monitoring solutions are also popular. In the case of a backup camera, your installer will integrate the camera with your vehicle, so the image displays when you put the transmission in reverse. A backup camera is a great feature for new drivers and makes parallel parking and backing up much easier and safer.

The R1 includes three control buttons on the right side of the screen. The center button gives you access to color, brightness and contrast menus. Giving the center button a quick tap displays the front (Video Input 1) image for 10 seconds. Buttons above and below the center button allow for adjusting the image display settings.

Momento designed the R1 system to be compatible with a wide variety of applications. The kit includes four mounting adapters and the R1 carries a three-year warranty. This installation flexibility means that you don’t need to purchase a new vehicle to enjoy the benefits of a backup camera system. Your local mobile enhancement retailer can upgrade almost any vehicle using Momento products.

Camera Solutions from Firstech

Firstech offers three universal camera solutions. The C1 (MR-C100) Backup Cam is an angled, surface-mount camera that provides a 170-degree field of vision. The camera mounts into a round hole and points down and rearward at a 45-degree angle to display everything in front of, or behind the vehicle.

The C2 (MR-C200) camera is a bullet-style camera that is designed for flush- or surface-mount solutions. The camera includes a keyhole mount and a bracket that can be angled for a variety of applications.

Momento R1 Rearview MirrorFinally, the C3 (MR-C300) camera includes six high-intensity LEDs that light up everything in its field of vision. The C3 kit also includes a license plate mounting bracket to make installation easier for your technician. This camera is perfect for applications when the reverse lights on the vehicle aren’t very bright or for use inside cargo vans or compartments where additional lighting may be required.

All three cameras feature an IP68 water intrusion rating, so you know they will withstand Mother Nature and car washes. If you are using these universal cameras with the R1 and their integrated adjustable parking lines, your technician can disable the parking line image built into the camera itself by cutting a wire loop during installation. All three cameras are configurable for normal or reverse-image display, so they can be used on the front or rear of the vehicle, and feature a standard composite video output for use with almost any display. Each of the three cameras also features a one-year warranty.

Momento S1 Parking Sensors

Momento R1 Rearview MirrorMomento’s S1 (MR-S100) parking sensor system is a great addition to the R1 mirror. The S1 system includes four ultrasonic proximity sensors and a compact speaker that produces beeps as you approach an object. Slow beeping commences at a distance of 6.7 feet. When you are less than 3.5 feet away, the beeps occur twice as often. Finally, at 1.3 feet away from an object, the beeps double in speed again to let you know you need to stop. The S1 system provides alerts automatically, rather than requiring you to remember to look at a display for improved safety. Many luxury vehicles include a backup camera and parking sensors for maximum protection.

Park and Maneuver Safely

The number of back-over accidents that take place each week in North America is stunning. Having a backup camera system like the Momento R1, in combination with the C1, C2 or C3 cameras and the S1 parking sensor system, will dramatically reduce the chance of an accident, injury and damage to your vehicle. A backup camera is a great addition to any vehicle and is especially beneficial on a truck, Jeep or SUV where rearward visibility is severely restricted. Product Spotlight: Sony XM-GS6DSP

Sony XM-GS6DSPSony introduced its new six-channel XM-GS6DSP amplifier at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show. This amplifier is targeted at OEM integration and upgrade solutions. It delivers up to 45 watts of power from its four main channels and up to 600 watts from the pair of subwoofer channels. This amp combines easy-to-use analog crossovers and integrated digital signal processing for time correction and equalization to proficient installers to create an impressive listening experience.

Ultra-Efficient, High-Power Amplification

Sony XM-GS6DSPMost factory-installed source units only provide 18 to 20 watts of power. The XM-GS6DSP will serve up 45 watts of power from its four main channels to give your music an extra kick. This power level is the perfect complement to factory-installed speakers or an upgrade like the Sony XS-GS1621C 6.5-inch two-way components we highlighted in 2017 or the new XS-GS1631C 3-way component set. The subwoofer channels of the amplifier provide 90 watts of power per channel into 4 ohms and are bridgeable into a 2-ohm load to provide an impressive 600 watts of power. All power specifications are compliant with the CTA-2006 standard and represent measurements taken at no more than 1 percent distortion using a 14.4V power supply.

Signal Processing Features

Sony XM-GS6DSPThe XM-GS6DSP includes dedicated six-channel preamp and speaker level input connections on Molex plugs. The preamp input will accept up to 6V of signal and the speaker-level inputs will take as much as 12 volts. The tweeter/front channels include an optional high-pass filter that is adjustable from 500Hz to 4kHz. The mid/rear channels include a 50 to 500 Hz high-pass filter and a 500 to 4kHz low-pass filter. A three-position switch allows for full range, high-pass or high- plus low-pass operation. Finally, the woofer/subwoofer channels include an optional 50 to 500Hz low-pass filter and an adjustable bass-boost circuit that adds up to 10dB of boost. The woofer/subwoofer channel is rated to play from 20Hz to 10kHz.

Sony XM-GS6DSPThe onboard DSP processor is accessible by a Bluetooth connection from your smartphone using the Sony | Music Center application. The application allows your installer to fine-tune the 4.1-channel signal delay and fader/balance controls to adjust the output of each channel to provide accurate staging and imaging in your vehicle. A 10-band equalizer is yet another tool available to improve the performance of the system. The subwoofer level control is also adjustable from your smartphone, so you can fine-tune your system for the specific track you are enjoying.

As with many Sony | Music Center-compatible devices, you can stream high-resolution audio directly from your smartphone to the amplifier. This feature eliminates the necessity to upgrade your head unit to achieve stunning sonic performance.

Elegant and Compact Design

Sony XM-GS6DSPThe Sony XM-GS6DSP measures a mere 11.6 by 7.85 inches and is 2 inches thick, which is perfect for installation under a seat or behind a panel in the trunk. All of the connections and controls are along a single side of the amp, making it easy to install and configure. The power terminals will accept 4 AWG spade connections, and the subwoofer channels can handle 12 AWG spades without any problem.

Internally, the amp uses dedicated power supplies for the subwoofer channels and the four main channels. Large, high-quality capacitors provide energy storage for each section of the amp. The Class-D output stage uses surface-mount switching devices clamped between the circuit board and the top of the heat sink. Large, square conductor inductors and premium quality capacitors on each main channel help to ensure that radio reception won’t be affected when the amp is working hard.

Unique Applications

Sony XM-GS6DSPAs mentioned, the XM-GS6DSP is an ideal amplifier for most OEM upgrade solutions. You can power a set of front and rear speakers from the main channels, then add a subwoofer to enhance low-frequency output. Alternatively, in a three-way configuration, the flexible crossovers afford you the choice of a two-way front stage using a set of woofers and tweeters, or you can build a three-way stage using passive filters between the midrange drivers and the tweeters. The latter is a nice upgrade that provides excellent musical clarity and stage height in your vehicle. If you don’t want a subwoofer, but still have room for a 3-way front stage, the extended frequency range capabilities of the woofer/subwoofer channels can be used to power six speakers in a fully active configuration. Adding a second amp, rear speakers and a subwoofer would make for a stunning listening experience.

The Sony XM-GS6DSP is an amplification solution that will provide everyone from the most casual of listeners to discerning enthusiasts with an impressive performance. The combination of analog filters and digital processing maximizes the feature-to-cost ratio to provide a hard-to-beat solution that is suitable for a wide variety of applications. If you are in the market for an amplifier for your system, drop by your local authorized Sony dealer and ask for a demonstration of the XM-GS6DSP today. It will be well worth your time.

Product Spotlight: AudioControl ACM Amplifiers

AudioControl ACM AmplifiersAudioControl has been very busy over the past few years developing new processors and amplifiers. At the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, AudioControl launched an entirely new series of micro-sized amplifiers designed to give enthusiasts amazing amplification performance from a compact package. While the amplifiers are small, they have the features and performance that you expect from the top audio company in the Pacific Northwest. Let’s check out the new Audio Control ACM amplifier series.

Introducing the new AudioControl ACM Amplifiers

The new ACM series includes three models. The ACM-4.300 is a four-channel amplifier that will produce 50 watts per channel into 4 ohms, 75 watts per channel into 2 ohms and is bridgeable to provide 150 watts into a pair of 4-ohm loads. The two-channel ACM-2.300 provides 75 watts from both channels into 4 ohms, 150 watts into 2 ohms and can drive a single 4-ohm load with up to 300 watts of power. Finally, the cool ACM-1.300 is a full-range monoblock amp that provides 175 watts into a 4-ohm load and an impressive 300 watts into a 2-ohm load.

Big Power in Compact Package

AudioControl ACM AmplifiersSize matters when it comes to fitting amplification solutions into modern vehicles. The new ACM series amplifiers share a common stamped steel chassis design. All three amps are 9.4 inches long, 3 inches wide and only 1.75 inches tall. Connections are made along the long bottom edge of the amplifier and include quick-release speaker connectors, RCA jacks and a large terminal block for power, ground and remote connections. Forgoing the conventional pigtail wire connection design common to most other micro-sized amplifiers not only makes the ACM amps easier to install, but easier to service and move from one application to another.

Easy-to-Configure Design

AudioControl ACM AmplifiersThe presence of the sensitivity and signal processing controls on the top of each amplifier is not by mistake. Once installed in a vehicle, trying to access controls on the end-panel of an amp is inconvenient and frustrating. The new ACM amps have a removable top panel that conceals each amplifier’s controls.

Each amplifier includes a stereo gain control that is adjustable from 500mV to 6.0 volts to ensure compatibility with almost any source. A set of terminals on the side of the amp allows for direct connectivity to speaker-level signals for easy factory audio system integration. The speaker-level inputs will accept as much as 40 volts of signal. Speaking of integration, all three amplifiers include AudioControl’s GTO (Great Turn-On) circuit. When enabled, GTO will activate the amplifier as soon as it senses the factory source unit or amplifier is on.

To assist in setting up the amplifiers accurately, AudioControl has included a “Maximized” LED for each channel pair on the two- and four-channel amps, and one on the monoblock. The LED illuminates when the output level has reached the point that is starting to clip.

Powerful Signal Processing Features

AudioControl ACM AmplifiersThe ACM-4.300 and ACM-2.300 include selectable 80 and 120Hz high-pass crossovers. The ACM-1.300 includes an 80 or 120Hz low-pass crossover. All of the filters have -12dB/octave slopes and a Linkwitz-Riley response.

The ACM-1.300 also includes AudioControl’s proprietary AccuBASS system. AccuBASS processing increases output beyond an adjustable threshold to help restore lost low-frequency information. Many factory-installed sound systems reduce bass output at high volume levels. AccuBASS can help to restore the fun in your music.

Finally, each amplifier includes AudioControls’s PFM (Programmable Frequency Match) Infrasonic filter. On the 4.300 and 2.300, the filter is set to 32 Hz, and on the 1.300 it is set to 24Hz. These filters help to optimize power delivery and reduce speaker excursion issues at extremely low frequencies. With PFM onboard, your music will sound better and play louder.

Take Your Audio System to a New Level with the AudioControl ACM Amplifiers

If you are listening to your music using deck power – be it a factory-installed radio or an aftermarket source unit – drop by your local Authorized AudioControl dealer and check out the new ACM series of amplifiers. These amps have the power, features and performance required to take your listening experience to a completely new level of musical enjoyment.
